Once i went to a marriage at trichy, I had this sambar , I loved its taste. So checked with the cook, about the recipe. He told its an ideal recipe for large number of people where you don't have to use more toor dal and veggie ,It has a different taste and smell , goes well with idly,dosa and ven pongal.

Ingredients:
Toor Dal - 1/2 cupGarlic cloves -4
Green chili-3
Onion cut lengthwise - 1 Cup
Turmeric powder
Sambar powder
Mustard seeds
Asafoetida
Salt
Oil
To Grind:
Grated coconutCumin seeds
Chili powder
Method:
Step 1: Pressure cook toor dal, garlic cloves, green chili and turmeric powder.
Step 2: In mixer grind grated coconut, cumin seeds, chili powder with water.
Step 3: In pan add oil, mustard seeds, Asafoetida and allow it to splutter, add the onion and saute well, till the raw smell goes. Add grind paste (step 2) and saute it. Then add the pressure cooked ingredients (step 1), salt, sambar powder and allow it to boil for 10 - 15 mins.
Once the tasty sambar is ready, serve hot with idly, dosa or ven pongal :)
